Saturday October 2, 2025: Jin Sei Ryu International Invitational Tournament. Held in Baltimore, MD

Why a tournament?
Through a tournament (and tournament workshop) your child will find their inner strength, courage, focus, and discipline. We focus on developing confidence to perform and engage in competition in a healthy way, and to practicing winning or losing with humility and kindness to themselves and others. As one participant’s family member (and retired figure skating judge!) said to their child after our 2024 tournament, “Competition is only against yourself. Your scores aren’t to compare you against others, but to help you see where you can improve for your next competition.” We agree! And we agree that while competition is exciting for some kids and overwhelming or scary for others, the lessons we learn about ourselves through engaging in healthy competition are priceless. Our approach to tournaments (and competition) at Culture of Safety is strengths-based, encouraging, and empowering. Every child goes home from our tournaments with increased confidence, pride, and a participant medal. Most leave excited to keep exploring these skills in their next class!

About the Tournament Prep Workshops
While these workshops will be helpful for students planning on entering either of the tournaments in 2025, signing up for a workshop does not obligate students to participate in a tournament. Participating in one of the workshops will be a useful way for students to know whether they are interested in participating in the tournament, and is also appropriate for students who are certain they do not want to participate, but who enjoy either board breaking or sparring.
Board Breaking Workshop
Saturday, April 12, 4:30 – 6:00
Open to all Culture of Safety PeeWees, Juniors, Youth, and Teens & Alum
Tournament board breaking at Culture of Safety is open to youth yellow belt and up and teen blue belt and up, but this board breaking workshop is open to all Culture of Safety karate students. All students will be coached in proper board breaking technique and etiquette, and will have the opportunity to break at least two boards. Registration fee includes both boards; time permitting, students may purchase additional boards for $5 each.
Shadow Sparring and Point Sparring Workshop
Saturday, April 26th, 4:30 – 6:00
Open to all Culture of Safety PeeWees, Juniors, Youth, and Teens & Alum
Open to all Culture of Safety PeeWees, Juniors, Youth, and Teens. We will be explaining new sparring rules, and introducing shadow sparring to newer students. Tournament point sparring is open to youth brown belts and up and teen green belts and up; shadow sparring is open to all ranks and all programs. All yellow belt and up youth students with some sparring experience will be able to try point sparring during the workshop, should they choose.
