Promotion Tests and Schedule

Promotion tests are an important part of karate training. They are akin to a graduation or recital (or a mix of the two) and are used to commemorate and ready students for their next level. Students cannot progress to their next rank without attending a promotion test.

Students who hope to test for promotion must:

• Be able to confidently demonstrate their current material AND material from previous ranks (in a developmentally-appropriate way)
• Have attended classes regularly for the minimum time at rank for their level. The minimum time at ranks starts at 2 months and increases as they progress in rank.
• Have attended a sufficient number of classes at their rank.

Typically students who attend an average of 10 classes per month (2-3 classes per week) are ready to test sooner. Students who attend only 1 class per week or attend class less regularly will take longer to meet requirement for advancing.

Sensei Amy and Senpai Kyren start assessing students for readiness for promotion 2-3 weeks before each promotion test and start handing out invitations by hand 1-2 weeks in advance of the test. Any students who are absent for the 2-3 weeks before a test will not receive an invitation, regardless of readiness to test.  Students or families who have questions about their preparedness for a specific promotion date should inquire with Sensei Amy or Senpai Kyren.

If you are a white belt or color belt and are hoping to test for rank advancement, we encourage you to mark your calendars with all potential test days. Make-up tests are available for the price of private lessons and are scheduled separately. 

Black Belt tests are scheduled separately from color belt tests. Black Belt candidates are invited generally 5-6 months ahead of their test to give them adequate time to make a plan to prepare.
